Foodstuffs continues to make great progress across a range of environmental related areas from waste reduction through to packaging design.

  • Store design

    Store design

The best way to reduce a store’s environmental impact throughout its life is to get the design right at the beginning.

  • Energy efficiency

    Energy efficiency

To reduce our footprint and demand on the network, energy efficiency is a priority when designing new stores and refurbishing existing ones.

  • Climate change and carbon emissions

    Climate change and carbon emissions

We’ve installed natural refrigeration systems in all new stores and major refurbishments. These new systems use CO² rather than synthetic gases, reducing refrigeration related greenhouse gas emissions by 99%.  This has resulted in a huge 45% reduction in our overall carbon footprint.

  • Water conservation

    Water conservation

All new stores are designed to minimise water use and wastage in accordance with the NZ Building Code and any applicable Council bylaws.

  • Waste Minimisation and Recycling

    Waste Minimisation and Recycling

The Waste Minimisation Programme for supermarkets encourages stores to focus on recycling and reusing waste at back of store, with landfill being a last resort.

  • Packaging - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

We also encourage our suppliers to accept responsibility in terms of the environmental effects of their products, and to comply with the Code of Practice for the Packaging of Consumer Goods.
