Energy efficiency

To reduce our footprint and demand on the network, energy efficiency is a priority when designing new stores and refurbishing existing ones.

Our stores continue to reduce their energy consumption by up to 2% per year in terms of energy consumption per m² thanks to energy efficient components such as skylights, lids and doors on all freezers, LED lighting and light sensor technology. Many stores now have real-time energy monitoring, reporting and maintenance, which identify other ways to save.

We’re smart about heating and cooling. Most new stores reclaim heat generated from cooling units to heat water, and air curtains are used to minimise the loss of hot or cold air from temperature-controlled areas. Night blinds or refrigeration curtains are also used to reduce energy use during non-trading hours.
