Tokoroa Social Supermarket
The Tokoroa Social Supermarket was established by Buttabean Motivation (BBM) in August 2022 and focuses on dignity in choice, allowing people experiencing food insecurity to select what they need rather than being given pre-filled food parcels.
BBM runs free community health and wellness programmes to help people lose weight and increase their fitness in a healthy, sustainable way. The programmes are delivered by Dave Letele and his team of experienced leaders serving Māori and Pasifika residing in socio-economic deprived communities. BBM engages with many individuals and their families who experience long-term illnesses related to obesity. Many also tend to live in inadequate housing and suffer from cultural inequity and high unemployment.
It was a no-brainer for us to partner with BBM to bring a Social Supermarket to life in Tokoroa, complementing their health and wellness programmes with a focus on tackling food insecurity because it has a serious impact on so many members of their community. Along with their broader programmes, the Tokoroa Social Supermarket gives whanau a hand up rather than a hand-out, enabling them to improve their overall health and increase their opportunities for employment, which can in turn help them to achieve better health outcomes.
